Salcombe is a haven for all types of yachtsmen, providing a popular stop off or shelter for vessels on a passage as well as providing quiet, safe waters for dinghies on the 1600 acres of inland estuary.

Whilst a lively town bustling with life in the summer months, Salcombe enjoys a certain peace out of season with most shops remaining open and the climate remaining mild.

Salcombe's position makes for an ideal holiday base with many local places of interest to visit and other coastal resorts to explore. Some of the most beautiful coastal walks in England can be taken from The Salcombe without having to use the car.

The Island cruising club is based in Salcombe with offices in Island Street, although its main base is the former Mersey ferry, The Egremont, moored in the Kingsbridge estuary. It is possible to have tuition on a wide range of sailing boats including dinghies, keel boats and yachts.

There are at least three places to hire self drive motor boats from in Salcombe as well as organised boat trips and fishing trips. In fact the ancient market town of Kingsbridge can be reached by boat, some five miles inland at the head of one of the creeks. It is also possible to visit The Millbrook pub at the head of Southpool creek on a full tide. One of the more popular organised trips is to go out over the bar on the old life boat, 'Joseph Soar'.

There are local ferry services running from Salcombe. The foot ferry connects Salcombe with East Portlemouth throughout the year, saving a twenty mile round trip. The ferry to South Sands runs throughout the main season while the Kingsbridge ferry makes the shopping trip into Kingsbridge a pleasant experience. It is possible to take the launch from Whitestrand out to the Egremont. 

Overbecks museum is situated just south of Salcombe, towards Bolt Head, offering amongst other things, spectacular views back up the estuary.
